Dive into the sloths! . To come face to face with the 30 oversized pink sloths I just made make sure to visit and explore the @miamidesigndistrict . Each sloths is made form thousands of agave fiber strands patiently knotted around a metal frame by weavers in Yucatán, Mexico. To achieve the dusky pink hue we used cochineal, an organic pink dye made with tiny scale insects that live in the prickly pear cactus which once dead, they dry out and can be ground into a pigment. .

Just finished setting up Pink Beasts my installation for the @miamidesigndistrict neighborhood comission made with agave fibers coloured with cochineal, a natural dye made with tiny insects that grow exclusively on the prickly pear cactus. Pink Beasts was made in Yucatan, Mexico over the past 3 months and it involved close to 60 people to produce it, most of them indigenous Mayan women. The beautiful hammocks are a limited edition of great @angeladammanyucatan done specifically for this project. Pink Beasts will be in display at the district for the holliday season so make sure to go check it out, relax on the hammocks discover the sloths hanging in trees around the neighborhood and walk under the hanging tails spread around the streets! . . . . . . . #agavefiber #agaveplant #handmade #mayan #mexicandesign #mexicandesigner #naturalfibers #naturaldyes #nontoxic #sustainabledesign #sustainability #indigenouspeople #newcraft #moderncraftsman #moderncraft #contemporarycraft #miami #miamidesigndistrict #pink #pinkhair

One of the many sloths hanging around the @miamidesigndistrict as part of my Pink Beast installation. Each of these is made up of agave fibers dyed with a natural pink cochineal pigment. To make their hairy bodies there are thousands of handmade knots around a metal wire frame. The sloths were made in Yucatan, Mexico home of one of the largest Mayan communities in the country who have been working with this material for thousands of years. Can design help preserve craft traditions alive by giving them a more contemporary feel? I think so! .. . . . . . . . #handmade #craft #moderncraft #naturalmaterials #naturalfibers #naturaldyes #mayan #mexicandesign #artsandcrafts #miamidesigndistrict #miami #sloths #pinkhair #designer #knotted
