Doreen Bloch

Amy says, “I love that you are doing this. I love hearing about beauty products from our mothers and grandmothers.” Pictured here applying lipstick in her youth is Amy’s grandmother Gerda, who was born in Berlin, Germany in 1911. Gerda did some modeling in the 1930s, and when Amy was a child, she grew up hearing stories about Gerda’s modeling days. “She told me that when it was really hot and the girls were going to walk a runway, they would put Jean Nate bath splash [Introduced in 1935 by @Revlon] on each other and blow on each other’s arms and backs. The air from their breath against the alcohol from the splash created a cooling effect. I was 11 or 12 years old when she told me that and that story always stuck with me.” Amy’s other main memory of her grandmother is that she always wore bright orange lipstick from a green Revlon tube. “She had a very distinct way of applying it. Kind of round and round so the top of the bullet would wear down to a to a smooth rounded top. I recently found a picture of her in her youth applying lipstick, so I thought I’d share.” #GenerationsOfBeauty

On #InternationalWomensDay we are honoring strong female leaders like the one and only Frida Kahlo. Kahlo is known for her unique painting styles that used symbolism to comment on important social issues, including gender inequalities within her home of Mexico. Kahlo was a painter, often using the canvas of her own face to express herself. In a @britishvogue article about an exhibit dedicated to Kahlo in London's @vamuseum, curator Claire Wilcox says "Kahlo came to rely on make-up. When her body let her down, her face became her canvas.” Swipe to see some of Frida Kahlo's personal products, including @revlon blush and lipstick in the shade Crimson. #FridaKahlo #MakeupMuseum #MakeupHistory
