The other day, my pal @mitche11collins posed the question “What does gratitude mean in a consumerist society?” Consumer culture trains us to perpetually look for what’s missing and chase it in the form of sales and new arrivals. It’s a kind of fun, pretty exhausting, endless cycle that always results in wanting more. When you approach buying with the goal of receiving knowledge about how a product is made and who is or isn’t being served in the process, you give yourself power to choose the good stuff. Your purchase can inherently return kindness to the people making it happen, and gratitude will likely follow you in each piece. A consumerist mentality will not lead you to gratitude, but gratitude can lead the way you consume 🖤
